Role: Fiber / Network Engineer

A Fiber Engineer at Meta works with the physical fiber optic infrastructure that connects its global data centers and ensures seamless data transmission. These roles, often called Connectivity Engineers or Network Engineers, focus on designing, implementing, and maintaining the physical cabling and network infrastructure. Responsibilities include managing the project lifecycle from start to finish, ensuring quality standards, and collaborating with internal and external teams on projects that span construction, upgrades, and maintenance.
Key responsibilities
Design and implementation: Work on the design and physical infrastructure of fiber optic networks, both inside and outside the data center.
Project management: Manage the full lifecycle of connectivity projects, from planning and kick-off to production turnover.
Troubleshooting and maintenance: Perform hands-on troubleshooting and repair of network hardware, software, and physical circuits.
Cross-functional collaboration: Work closely with various teams, including data center design, construction, and operations, to ensure projects are executed successfully.
Vendor management: Manage relationships and activities with installation partners and vendors, ensuring they adhere to best practices and quality standards.
Documentation and asset management: Maintain an asset database and related documentation for the installed network infrastructure.
Upgrades and decommissioning: Execute network maintenance, including software and hardware upgrades, capacity upgrades, and decommissioning of old infrastructure.
Required skills and experience
Experience with physical infrastructure design, including structured cabling and fiber-optic cabling.
Strong understanding of network protocols such as BGP, IS-IS, MPLS, and TCP/UDP.
Knowledge of routing and switching.
Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously and working in a global team environment.
Hands-on experience with networking
Installation and maintenance: Install, label, and maintain fiber optic and copper cabling systems within the data center. This includes physical installation and managing power and space allocation.
Cable management: Maintain clean and consistent cable management practices and manage spare parts and cable inventory.
Testing and troubleshooting: Use tools like OTDRs (Optical Time Domain Reflectometers), OLTS (Optical Loss Test Sets), and fusion splicers to test and troubleshoot fiber cables and connectors.
Documentation: Maintain comprehensive documentation for the fiber infrastructure and contribute to standardizing procedures.
Collaboration: Coordinate with engineers, electricians, contractors, and project managers to ensure project milestones are met and systems are integrated seamlessly.
Break-fix repairs: Perform break-fix repairs on fiber optic components.
